Roof Cleaning - DIY
Safe and Effective Tips
Keeping your roof clean is not only a health issue; it is a safety
issue as well. When your roof is dirty, covered with leaves, moss,
algae, standing water, or loose tiles/shingles, these are issues that
reduce the value of your home and can actually cause physical health
problems inside the home.
In tropical areas, the moisture in the air can quickly leave a
coating of moss and algae growing on your roof. If your roof is not in
great repair and you have flat spots where standing water can
accumulate, mosquitoes and other insects can easily make that standing
water a breeding ground. YUCK!
For those in dryer areas, sudden storms and blustery winds can easily
leave tiles or shingles loose, or worse, leaves and branches can quickly
become a hazard.
Roof Cleaning
Power washing can be a beneficial way to clean your roof (provided
nothing is there that can be blown off such as tiles, shingles or
branches), if it is one made with metal, barrel tile, or concrete. There
are no harsh chemicals that are used in pressure washing. Many
homeowners choose this method when the need of washing their roof
arises, simply because it is an environmentally friendly way of getting
the needed job done efficiently. (Although, make sure you check if you
have any water restrictions!)
Roof Cleaning - Degreasing with Sodium Hydroxide base
For an effective method of degreasing your roof, you could use sodium
hydroxide-based cleaning. If you are using this type of chemical to
clean your roof, you will need to take special care that it is
thoroughly rinsed well, when you are finished. If you decide to use this
method, you need to be aware that it is a toxic chemical. Take extra
precautions to ensure it does not come in contact with any humans,
animals, or plants.
Roof Cleaning - Washing with Chlorine Solution
Using a chlorine solution wash is perhaps the most preferred method
in roof cleaning a home or business. This method requires a
significantly smaller amount of time for rinsing. Therefore, it will
ultimately take a lot less time to complete your roof-cleaning project
with this method.
There are some people however who are allergic to the chlorine that
is used in the solution. It can also harm a large majority of
landscaping plants. You will need to ensure that you take the necessary
precautions to see that the product does not come in contact with other
individuals, plants, or animals.
Roof Cleaning Conclusion
There are obviously some dangers no matter which type of procedure
you use to clean your roof. You should always use a great deal of
caution and a little common sense when you are handling any type of
chemical to ensure that everyone’s safety is the top priority. The extra
amount of effort it takes to ensure safety will certainly be worth it in
the long run. |
